SUGI REVIEW

Location :
At the left corner of New World Renaissance Hotel - Makati Philippines

Cuisine :
Japanese

Ambience :
It's quite a big place, with 2 floors and twice as large as Zenya.
The ambience is very "Zen"
The moment you open the door, a water wall greets you, it has a very cooling effect
There are regular table, and some seats near the Sushi Bar, but no conveyorbelt.
No tatami style seating either.
Large sized lampions are attractively hung from the high ceiling
Actually, it was the lampions that first induced me into visiting this resto.

Menu:
They have everything there
Sushi and rolls as well as other popular Japanese cuisine, icluding rice dishes, teppanyaki, sukiyaki
The menu book is more than 10 pages with sized 10 fonts
You name it, they have it
They even have a choice of Kobe Beef dishes.
Kobe Beef is a special breed from Japan, rumour says the flocks were treated with daily massage to prevent taut muscle.
The prices of these special dishes is nearly twice the regular NZ one.
They also serve pork dishes.

My Try :
All my favorite :
Agedashi Tofu, Fried Tempura - Style Silken Tofu in Soyu
They came without the usual bonito flake, so it doesn't have that sea fragrance

Shiitake Teppanyaki :
Sauteed Shiitake in Soyu
The Shiitake are fresh, but it's too soggy and a bit greasy

Sukiyaki :
I innocently ordered this dish , without realizing they worth 1000 pesos per portion. but the waiter kindly offered me to order half and fortunately I agreed, hence 500 pesos
It turned out to be a mega dish, served in a deep hot iron bowl that looked more like a bucket
The tender NZ beef is exquisite, too bad that they serve it using thin mungbean vermicelli,
I was expecting a thick munchy one, with it's gummy texture

Damage :
The range is quite wide from 100 pesos (17500 IDR) of small dishes likeAgedashi Tofu and Teppanyaki
to 2000 pesos (350,000 IDR) for Kobe Beef Teriyaki.
Since I mistakenly ordered the extra expensive sukiyaki, I spend about 900 pesos (160,000 IDR).
Overall rate : 6.5 of 10

Comment :
Their wide range of menu is really impressive, but they lack that real Japan touch
Agedashi Tofu without bonito flake? C'mon!!!
Sukiyaki with local vermicelli? Unacceptable
If u want to find the same varieties, try Sakana in Jakarta, they're exquisite but their choice of sushi are rather limited.
